“Build a business that doesn’t need you on the tools.”
Why does pricing your work feel so personal?
In the trades, you build the world with your hands. But when it’s time to send an invoice or quote a job, doubt creeps in:
“Will they pay this?”
“Am I too expensive?”
“Will they just go with someone cheaper?”
Sound familiar?
You know your work is solid. You’ve earned it. But getting paid what you're worth—and feeling confident about it—means learning to value your work and helping clients see that value too.
1. Believe in Your Value
If you don’t value your time, no one else will.
Years of skill and experience don’t come cheap. The ability to solve problems fast isn’t luck—it’s earned.
Ask yourself:
Are you pricing from value or fear?
Would you proudly pay your own invoice?
2. Sell Outcomes, Not Tasks
Most clients don’t know what they’re buying. To them, it’s “a new fence.” To you, it’s: security, peace of mind, increased property value.
Shift how you describe the job from...“$15,000 for landscaping” to “$15,000 for a low-maintenance outdoor space built for family and curb appeal.”
When they see the why, they understand the price.
3. Quote With Confidence
Quoting is selling. It’s not just labour and materials—you’re offering:
Experience
Accountability
A stress-free outcome
Use clear language Walk them through the value Offer options (basic vs. premium)
Confidence builds trust. Uncertainty kills sales.
4. Systemise How You Deliver
You can’t grow if everything relies on you.
A business becomes valuable when:
Systems are clear
Workflows are repeatable
Your team can deliver your standard
Want freedom from the tools? Get your business running without you.
5. Communicate Like a Pro
Clients don’t just want a great job—they want a great experience.
Do this:
Provide clear, itemised quotes
Update them regularly (even with “no update”)
Own your mistakes
Trust is built in how you communicate, not just how you build.
6. Charge What You’re Worth—And Deliver Like You Mean It
You’re not the cheapest. Good.
Let others race to the bottom. You’re building quality, reliability, and reputation. People pay more when they trust you—and when you believe in what you bring.
